5 Podcasts & 5 Reasons To Replace Music With Podcasts

Are you tired of constantly listening to the same music over and over again? Have you listened to “Don’t Stop Believin'” one too many times? I used to listen to the same twenty songs on every single drive I took. Music lost its appeal for me extremely quickly. Now don’t get me wrong, I still occasionally enjoy listening to music! I do not think there is anything wrong with music, however, I found myself in a rut of mindlessly spending large portions of my day doing something that kept my brain very idle… which in fact didn’t even bring me that much joy. I wasn’t gaining anything from spending hours a day listening to music and it also left me feeling wildly unproductive. This is when I discovered the glamours of podcasts!

In short, podcasts are basically just talk radio that you can listen to at your own convenience! They have brought me so much entertainment, knowledge, and pleasure that music had not! Here are my top 5 reasons why you should transition over to podcasts!

1. Podcasts make you more intelligent

Just like blogs, you can obtain a vast amount of information on a wide range of topics through podcasts! There is an endless amount of content that can keep your mind occupied for hours! From podcasts on news and politics to health and nutrition, you will constantly be learning something new!

2. Podcasts are great for learning while multitasking

I am not an advocate for multitasking because I believe that it just leads to mental whiplash, however, there is a period of time that I like to refer to as your “In-between time” where podcasts are highly practical! Times such as driving to work, going to the gym, doing chores leaves you with more flexibility to multitask. As an alternative to music, use podcasts to fill in this in-between time and familiarize yourself with a new topic!

3. Podcasts make you a better conversationalist

Like I mentioned previously, when you subscribe to a podcast you gain more knowledge on a particular subject. Ever have a conversation with someone that you had no similar interests with? It makes for a pretty boring discussion, doesn’t it? Podcasts provide you with the know-how to have an interesting conversation with anyone! Even if the other person does not have anything to contribute, at the minimum you are leaving them with some compelling information!

4. Podcasts are FREE

The best things in life you can’t buy, which is another reason why podcasts are superior to music! Excluding some rare situations, podcasts tend to be completely free. All podcasts listed in the iTunes Music Store are available to you without charge and can be downloaded directly onto your device to listen to whenever you please! Comparing this to the absurd market price of downloadable music today, I give another point to podcasts.

5. There’s a podcast for everything

I once listened to an hour-long podcast on toilet paper. Yup… toilet paper. You can find nearly anything online, no matter how specific you believe it is. Whether you have a love for Chinese folklore or an obsession with soap carving, there is a podcast scrutinizing the topic into proportions you could have never imagined. With so much diversity, you are guaranteed to find a podcast that you enjoy!

The countless number of podcasts may leave you overwhelmed and unsure where to begin. These are five of my favorite podcasts that I would recommend to anyone!

1. TED Talks Daily

TED Talks Daily is the number one most popular podcast on iTunes for a reason. This podcast covers almost all topics and can be streamed in over 100 different languages. I fell in love with TED talks almost instantly and have subscribed to most of their podcasts!

2. The Savvy Psychologist

The Savvy Psychologist is consistently a great listen! Dr. Ellen Hendriksen takes the science of psychology and creates a captivating podcast that is useful and entertaining! She answers your mental health questions from wild to mild and is here to help you achieve a healthier emotional life!

3. Revisionist History

This podcast keeps my undivided attention every time and keeps me glued to my car seat long after I have arrived home. Malcolm Gladwell takes you back to the overlooked events in the past and re-examines if we got it right the first time. If you’re looking for a fascinating podcast, this is the one!

4. My Brother, My Brother And Me

As much as I appreciate cultivating the mind, I also have a fondness for comedy and humor! Occasionally you need to give yourself a break and just listen to these three guys because they are comedic gods! Travis, Justin and Griffin McElroy give you their great life advice in this hilarious podcast!

5. Planet Money

I personally love this podcast. I was never overly fascinated by economics, yet their use of stories and anecdotes keeps me listening to their podcasts over and over again! However, Planet Money is more than just economics, it’s more than business. It is a podcast that will provide you with amusement and knowledge that you will remember!

Next time you are on a lengthy road trip or need to kill a few hours and have your headphones handy, exchange your overplayed music for a fresh, informative and entertaining podcast. You won’t regret it!
